askew’s Summer Art Camp is a 6-week program for kids and teens ages 12 to 18. Camp hours will be 1:00PM-5:30PM Monday through Friday. It is intended to give young people a chance to explore their artistic creativity, build their skills and learn to express themselves through different media. Participants will work on a variety of art projects including mosaic tiling, photography, drawing, ceramics and more. It will be held at the askew studio, except for the listed outing days when we will visit other arts organizations. askew’s Summer Art Camp is for everyone, including beginners who are just interested in pursuing a fun hobby or for the aspiring artists of tomorrow.
As part of askew’s mission to prepare young artists for their future, the camp will also include workshops introducing topics related to the business of art and careers in art. We will also take field trips to a museum as well as other gallery visits and a visit to Frost Bank. We want to help give students a clearer understanding of the business aspects and economic benefits of the art world.
Tuition is $145 ($5 a day for 29 days).
Payment can be made with a check or money order
made out to askew.

Student artworks from the camp will be chosen from the final

exhibit.

Askew and Bihl Haus Arts are collaborating to bring Indian husband and wife artist team, Prasanta and Ela Mukherjee, to our centers for a residency. Prasanta will exhibit his artwork at the Bihl Haus, participate in a public panel discussion and lead a three-week workshop with askew students and senior citizens from Primrose Senior Apartment Center. Participants working in the askew studio will make a sculpture with tile mosaics which will be installed at the Primrose Center. Many other activities are included.

askew has embarked on it's Westside Neighborhood Markers project with partners: Lanier High School, MujerArtes—a project of the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, the American Sunrise Foundation & Councilwoman Patti Radle’s District 5 Office. Working with Lanier students, MujerArtes members and community members Askew will create a series of mosaic markers (similar to te “Deco Markers” on Fredericksburg Road) illustrating the historical, cultural & artistic contributions of San Antonio's Westside to the city. These markers will be installed in metal stands along the Commerce and Buena Vista corridor in the Prospect Hill area.

Sponsored by the Greater San Antonio After-School All-Stars.
Carolina Flores, a professional artist/instructor is teaching in three schools in the Southwest Independent School District. The schools are NcNair Sixth Grade, McAuliffe and Scobee Middle Schools. The curriculum involves teaching visual art skills, mural preparation studies and the creation of a school mural. Ms. Flores is an accomplished professional painter and has made many painted ceramic mosaics. She has a commercial painting studio above the SaySi Studio in the Blue Star Art complex.
UTSA purchased the 4 X 16 foot mosaic/steert art sign for its downtown campus. The sign was created by Victor Zarazua (Supher) and Colleen Frost. It is the first time we are aware of tile and “street art” being combined in a single medium.
Fifteen wholly original, large-scale, collaborative, mosaic-covered street art pieces by Frost and Zarazua and several new paintings will be on display in the Bromley Communications' downtown office for one night only on July 27, 2005 from 5-8pm. The exhibit will be accompanied by a reception with food and music with proceeds to benefit askew. For more information about this and other events, see the Contemporary Art Month Event Listing.
Askew collaborated with the Joven Center through an Arts in the Community grant to create a two sided 3 foot X 6 foot mosaic tiled mural. Their young artists started with clay to create tile self-portraits. The clay faces were then put on the mural sign and surrounded with tiles. Ralph Pena created the ornate holder which displays the sign on the corner of White Ave. and S. Flores at Joven's facilities.
Askew artist Fernando Gomez created the poster for the 2004 Jazz'SALive festival sponsored by the San Antonio Parks Foundation. Fernando is a Jefferson High School art student who has worked with Askew studios for over two years. His mosaic sign was made into their annual poster.
Fernando's artwork is very dramatic and features a grouping of jazz instruments done in vibrant multi-colored mosaic tile. He drew up his design and then made all the mosaic tiles by hand, rolling out the clay, cutting it out, firing it, glazing it, re-firing it and then carefully placing it on cement board.
A limited number of signed and numbered posters are available from Askew for $40. To order, call 210-288-5157 or use our contact form.
The Woodlawn Lake Sailing Club 3x5 foot mosaic was funded by a grant from The Women of SBC Foundation. The sign is a tribute to past Mayor Lila Cockrell and all her contributions to San Antonio's parks. The sign was created by Askew artists Lauren Monreal and Gilbert Martinez. They are both Jefferson High School art students.
The sign is on the north wall of the Woodlawn Lake Sailing Club located in Woodlawn Lake Park. The sailing club was founded in 1939. The sign shows the Lake and its historic lighthouse with boats sailing the waters.
